"OooH och Kolte"

We celebrated "OooH och Kolte" on our village square, with small dishes, music and dancing around the fire. As every year, everyone is invited to join in the celebrations.

Many thanks to all the sponsors who made this celebration possible. We would like to thank the municipality of Paionias, Lainas Dimitris, Papakarmezi Xanthippe, Kupanis Dimitris and Nikos Makris.

August harvest

Traditionally, fresh vegetables and fruits were and are preserved for the winter.

Salsa fired

Just like in great-grandma's time, Chrisantos prepared the salsa over an open fire.

-The broth from the peeled tomatoes is slowly reduced with a little salt and optional fresh herbs in a pot over the open fire.
A little patience and the salsa can be bottled in jars. Ready to store until winter.

Sun in jars

The delicious peaches from Omalo are preserved in the classic way with sugar.

Halved, pitted and peeled, they are put into the jar with lemon juice and sugar. At the end, water is poured on so that the fruits are covered. The closed jars are heated in boiling water for about 20 minutes.
Leave the jars to cool upside down. Done - and the aroma of the fresh peaches is almost completely preserved.

Zizifa - from China to the Paikos

Where wine thrives is also the best climate for the zizifa.

Already 2000 years ago, the Chinese used the healing power of the fruit and the plant. It is still used today in traditional Chinese medicine.
It is good for intestinal health and digestion. Those who eat it regularly or drink it as a tea are predicted a long and healthy life.
In September, the zizifa becomes ripe and red, ready for harvesting here in Pentalofos.

Greek national and religious holiday

Tradition

This holiday commemorates the liberation of the Greeks from almost 400 years of 'Turkish rule' by the 'Tourkokratía'.

The village community gathers on the Platia in the morning. After a short devotion and consecration by the priest, the village headwoman Toula Tziali lays the wreath at the memorial stone. Afterwards, sweets and drinks are distributed.
